Telangana seeks spotlight in Olympic India

The state of the Asian giant has made it clear at several events held in its capital that it is advancing a coordinated strategy to ensure its representation in every sport in which the country would compete, should it ultimately host 2036 Summer Games.

The Olympic horizon, for which India formally submitted its letter of intent to the International Olympic Committee in October last year— continues to take shape through a series of strategic moves in infrastructure, sports governance and investment. In this context, Telangana has positioned itself as one of the country's most ambitious territories in building an ecosystem capable of nurturing the future athletes who aspire to represent India, should the national bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games prosper.

The most decisive push came last week from the capital, Hyderabad, where the state government presented a far-reaching sports agenda during Sports Tech Podium 2025, held at T-Hub. The Special Chief Secretary of Telangana, Jayesh Ranjan, set out with clarity the long-term vision included in the state's sports policy. According to Telangana Today, the official stated that "Our Olympic mission was clear right from the drafting of the Telangana Sports Policy," underscoring that the goal is to ensure presence in "every sport India participates in at the 2036 Olympics." The roadmap, he explained, pursues an unambiguous objective: to create a cross-cutting talent pipeline that spans all Olympic disciplines.

Ranjan contextualised that ambition within the rise of Hyderabad as a hub of innovation applied to sport. Sports Tech Podium brought together investment funds, investor networks, universities and public bodies around a platform that combines capabilities in biosciences, aerospace, ICT and performance analysis. Startups such as Centre Court Capital, LegaXy, Impetus Sports Capital and Hyderabad Angels took part, reflecting the integration of advanced technology into sporting preparation, from biometric analysis to the digital broadcasting of local competitions.

As Game Point's co‑founder and CEO Aditya Reddy described it, the first digital wave democratised access to court bookings, training and tournaments, while now "deeper technology is integrating into performance, analytics and broadcasting, even small events get live coverage today."

The event featured the company INVE Sports Venture LLP, which presented its 360D Sports initiative and launched Sports Accelerator Sprintx, an acceleration programme for sport, wellness and fitness startups designed to offer investment support, scaling itineraries and specialised guidance. The project is backed, among others, by the Sports Authority of Telangana, Woxsen University and Hyderabad Angels.

Telangana's strategy, however, goes beyond technological innovation. Telangana Today also reported that Ranjan announced the state's intention to progressively reduce its direct involvement in sports management, favouring a model in which industry and the private sector lead growth. To this end, he set out the creation of a Sports University dedicated to training, research and high performance. This approach seeks to consolidate a stable structure capable of generating talent on a sustained basis, aligned with the political priority which, he recalled, is shared by the chief minister himself, whom Ranjan described as a strong promoter of sport.

In parallel, another relevant announcement reinforced the infrastructural dimension of the strategy: the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the government of Telangana and GMR Sports, within the framework of the Telangana Rising Global Summit 2025, held this week at Bharat Future City. According to the news agency ANI, the project —defined as a milestone by its promoters— envisages the creation of a Satellite Sports City equipped with high-level training facilities, international-standard stadiums, sports science centres, performance laboratories, rehabilitation areas and complementary services.

In the words of Kiran Kumar Grandhi, Corporate Chairman of GMR Group and Chairman of GMR Sports, "Partnering with the Government of Telangana, we are driving a vision for the Satellite Sports City that will unlock opportunities for athletes, communities, and industries, strengthening Telangana's standing as a rising global hub for sports and next-generation development."

The initiative will also involve Dubai Sports City as a knowledge partner. Its head of sales and investments, Rania Oueslati, welcomed the collaboration, highlighting the opportunity to build global standards at the heart of India. "This collaboration brings together our shared commitment to high-performance infrastructure and global sporting standards," she stated. According to ANI, the state government will ensure the necessary authorisations under its policy to expedite the launch of the complex.

The location chosen for this sports city, Bharat Future City, symbolises the state's vocation for the future: a smart, net-zero industrial district oriented towards emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence, electric mobility, life sciences and entertainment. Integrating flagship sporting infrastructure into a technological and sustainable ecosystem responds to the purpose of placing Telangana on the global map of innovation and advanced urban development.

All these moves are framed within a national context of growing sports diplomacy and infrastructure expansion. Since the Indian Olympic Association presented its letter of intent in October 2024 for 2036 Games, the country has intensified its strategy to consolidate itself as a sporting power. Statements by the Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah during the closing of the Sansad Khel Mahotsav this week in Gujarat, underpinned the official discourse by affirming that Ahmedabad is advancing towards the Olympic bid and that the city must "be prepared, because the city is also going to welcome the Olympics in 2036."

The aspiration is added to the recent designation of Ahmedabad as host of the 2030 Commonwealth Games, a milestone that reinforces the government's objective of positioning India as a frequent host of major sporting events. Telangana seeks to articulate itself in this landscape as a key ally, as a state with double-digit economic growth, record investments and a multi-sector fabric capable of supporting the construction of a first-rate sports ecosystem.
